New Stories & Posts

This story is focused upon an encounter that ‘happened’ during a travel group that I led to Egypt in January 2003. Another version of it has been posted elsewhere, yet many of my readers may not have seen it … and this prompts me to share this account with you.

I must admit to a few trepidations in offering this one as it is fairly far out, but those of my readers who have been with me for a while should be able to accept it with equanimity.

As we move toward the beginning of a new year, many of us are courageously taking stock of what is going on in our world. And as we do, our attention is drawn inexorably, and with discernment, to the storytelling fare that is being presented to us by the major information sharing sources, such as the national and international news media, special interest groups including religion, commerce driven campaigns, and the social media outlets.

Those who have taken our shamanic training workshops over the last twenty years have become familiar, sooner or later, with the elemental spirits that are planetary in nature, as well as with the qualities and abilities that these transpersonal forces may convey to those of us if and when we come into relationship with them.

In March of this year (2013) I arrived at the Breitenbush Hotsprings and Conference Center in the mountain forests and of northern Oregon to teach a week-long Visionseeker workshop to a group of spiritual seekers. These gatherings are designed to assist non-tribal western people in achieving expanded states of awareness, bringing them into connection with those inner sources of wisdom and power and healing that traditional peoples call spirits.

I often mention that in the Western world, when we hear the word "shaman," most of us tend to conjure up an image of a masked and costumed indigenous tribal person, dancing around a fire in the dark, involved in some sort of mysterious ritual, accompanied by singing and drum beats. But inside that cultural shell of mask, costume and ritual, there is a woman or a man with a set of very real skills. The shaman is the master of the trance experience.

Allow me to draw from the book that my wife Jill Kuykendall and I co-authored—Spirit Medicine: Healing in the Sacred Realms—to offer you a gift. If you have a serious health issue, here is a healing meditation that you can do in your sacred garden, your inner place of power and healing (also see my book The Journey to the Sacred Garden) for 30 minutes or more, at least once or twice each day.
